What is a CPL or MCOLES#?
CPL is short for Concealed Pistol License and is issued from the State of Michigan after completing the required course and application. MCOLES stands for Michigan Commision on Law Enforcement Standards; this body of government oversees and issues Law Enforcement certifications and is identified via a unique number hense the # after MCOLES.
Why do I need a CPL or MCOLES# to participate in SARE Training?
The short answer: Its a background check. SARE strives to provide training for responsibly armed, law abiding citizens and First Responders. We feel it is partially our responsibility to keep the knowledge we teach from those who may do harm.
Is a CPL equivalent to MCOLES training?
No, the requirement to get a CPL includes a mere 8 hour course with mostly law and very little shooting. Law Enforcemnt Academy graduates have had more time on the range and more in depth training but its not that much more and falls very short of what you will soon learn the standards to be with SARE. Essentially they are both considered starting points from our perspective. Law Enforcement Officers also have concealed carry priveledges off-duty so they are not required to get a CPL and we accept that as an alternative.
I dont have a CPL yet, do you offer CPL training?
Im so glad you aksed! Kurt Grashow with Applied Tactical Defense is part of the same Trinity Tactical Group as SARE! His website is appliedtacticaldefense.com and he has classes available in Mount Pleasant and Harrison, MI
How well should I be able to shoot before taking a class with SARE?
For a class like HACNOW, which was designed to be the very next step after CPL, we want you to know less and to not have learned any bad habits. You are HIGHLY encouraged to take this class as soon as possible after obtaining your CPL. We will teach you HOW to train! Our other classes have pre-requisites like HACNOW or prior training so its most important to start training!
Where are SARE classes held?
All classes at this point are held in the Harrison, MI area. We have a private range, shoothouse, and classroom at different locations but all within a couple miles. You will receive detailed information on class location, when to arrive, reminders on what to bring, etc. approx. 2 weeks before the class date.
Do you recommend certain firearms, holsters, or other equipment for EDC?
YES! We recommend HACNOW, again, you dont know what you dont know. HACNOW explores different holsters and carry positions and discusses garment considerations and much more. Part 1 of this class is all about educating you on what to shop for and how.
